Cat Lovers in Italy

Every day, I am blown away but the generous support and kind words from people who wander on to my website and find my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CD. But I find even more mind-boggling is when I'm checking my webpage stats, and I find new fans in Italy!

Yes, I do travel to Italy fairly regularly since I have family there. But it seems Viktor has no connection with anyone I know there. He and now some of his friends just found the website and are as excited about the CD as I am.

And that is only one country. I've also seen German fans too. It is exciting to see how this project will continue to develop when I finally release the album in a few months.

Scottish Fold Cats

In 1961 a shepherd by the name of William Ross spotted the first known Scottish Fold cat at a farm near Coupar Angus in the Tayside Region of Scotland, Northwest of Dundee. Ross asked the owners if he could have one of the kittens, and proceeded to develop the breed from the original, Susie, a white barn cat. The unique thing about this cat was that her ears folded forward and downward on her head. The resulting look gave the impression of a "pixie", "owl", or "teddy bear" that has captured the hearts of many American cat fanciers and judges. The Scottish Fold was granted championship status by The Cat Fanciers' Association (CFA) in 1978.

Scottish Folds come in two types: folded ear and straight (normal) ear. The folded ear is produced by an incomplete dominant gene and is the result of a spontaneous mutation. Scottish Fold kittens are born with straight ears. Over the last two decades the Scottish Fold has developed a look all its own...even though allowed outcrosses include American Shorthairs and British Shorthairs. The Fold does not necessarily resemble the American Shorthair's hard, powerful "working cat" body and squared-off muzzle. Nor does it look like the British Shorthair's massive, compact body, short legs, and flat planed top-head. The Fold, instead, is a medium cat with a rounded, well-padded body and a short, dense, and resilient coat. It has large, round, broadly spaced eyes full of sweetness; well-rounded whisker pads and a short nose with a gentle curve in profile.

At about three to four weeks of age, their ears fold...or they don't! It is usually around eleven to twelve weeks of age that the breeder can determine the quality (pet, breeder or show). Presently, only folded ear cats of Scottish lineage are permitted in the show ring, and naturally, every breeder wants to produce show cats. The straight ear progeny of Scottish Folds, nevertheless, are invaluable to the breeding program.

Due to the rarity of the Fold, AND due to the fact that not every kitten born has folded ears, it is very hard for the supply to keep up with the demand.

Scottish Folds are hardy cats, much like their barnyard ancestors. Their disposition matches their sweet expression. They have tiny voices and are not extremely vocal. They adore human companionship and display this in their own quiet way. Scottish Folds adapt to almost any home situation and are as comfortable in a room full of noisy children and dogs as they are in a single person's dwelling. They don't usually panic at shows or in strange hotel rooms, and they adjust to other animals extremely well.

Scottish Folds come in any and all colors possible with the exception of those showing evidence of hybridization resulting in the colors chocolate, lavender, the Himalayan pattern, or a combination of these and white.

"Furagone's Wake" on the Pab Sungenis Project!

My favorite comedy radio program is downloadable. It's called The Pab Sungenis Project and is located at Low Budget Radio.com. The show is a helluva lot of fun and available every Friday as a Podcast.

This week, the show featured "Furagon's Wake". For some odd reason, there was no mention of The Dubliners' Tabby Cats or the CatDrinkingSongs.com URL, but that's okay, I guess. Sure there's a force greater than me (my cats) guiding this project, but I guess I am the one who's singing.

Let's just remember to give credit where credit is due: Tiziano and Torre, my TnT.

Cat CD Nears the Finish Line

Ah, another raucous recording session. Yesterday, I had a full day free, so my producer, Ari Koinuma, came over and we recorded music for my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers CD.

Yesterday featured Cedric the Fiddler of the Bedlam Bards and Michelle Hedden. Michelle plays bodhran with my regular band, the Brobdingnagian Bards, whenever we are up in Missouri. She was kind enough to fly down here for the weekend to record on this CD. Course, she was pretty happy to do it since she's a major cat lover too.

We started with Michelle adding rockin' bodhran to "The Mining Ship the Red Dwarf", "I'll Tell My Cat", and "Jasper Tabby Kitty Cat-y".

Then Cedric laid fiddle for "Black Kitty Paw", "The Cat Came Back (Cat's Perspective)", and moving line to "Black Is the Colour (of My Cat's Fur)". Then Cedric added a few background vocals to the first two of those songs. You can always tell someone who performs at Renaissance Festivals, because they always seem to have the most-powerful vocals. And Cedric was no exception. He really boomed it out.

After he was done, I picked up a copy of his CD Take Out the Trash so I could add it to my Renaissance Festival Podcast. Then we recorded Michelle on dombek. She played it on "Black Is the Colour", "Black Kitty Paw", "Harry Potter and the Rising of the Moon" and "The Cat Came Back".

Once all those were done, I suggested some cat sounds for the CD. So Michelle, Kristen Roger, and I huddled around the microphone and goofed around adding various meows to the CD. It was quite humorous being immortalized for better or worse Meowing!

Fantastic day of recording. It was as much fun as the session last week, when Sarah Dinan came in to sing vocals for "Black Is the Colour" and a "Cat Named Rover". She was joined again by Ben Hamby and Blake McCaig.

That means we are almost done. All we have left is two fiddle parts by Chris Buckley, one by Heather Gilmer, and a few flute parts by April Porter. So close! :)
